A New Residence
Design
The design of the new residence reflects how the Sisters work and live: as a community, in prayer, and with open welcoming doors. The house will have living areas for the Sisters, a kitchen and refectory, a garage for three vehicles, common living space, handicap accessibility, and a chapel to which the public is welcome. The new residence will also reflect the core values that the Sisters hold regarding the community, the land and the environment.

Commitment to Duxbury
The Sisters of Saint Margaret have been part of the Duxbury community since 1903. Maintaining the beauty and tranquility of the property is of utmost importance to the Sisters. The new residence will reflect and mirror the beautiful New England seaside design that is found in Duxbury. Just as the Sisters will integrate to a greater degree into the town, the building too will fit seamlessly into the landscape and architecture of the area.
Conservation of Open Space
In 1991, the Sisters sold a piece of their property to the Town of Duxbury. This was to establish a Town Green that is accessible to everyone. An additional portion of the Sisters’ land which borders Washington Street was made conservation land and is open to the public for passive recreation. The site has always been a place of retreat and reflection. Part of that experience is a growing appreciation and respect of our natural surroundings.
Why Green?
In an effort to use natural resources in a responsible way, the architect has designed a building that will recycle, reuse and respect the creation. The Sisters intend to become more self-sustaining and ecologically sensitive.
“The Society of St. Margaret’s concern for the town and neighborhood is apparent when they permanently protected portions of their land in 2001 by creating the Millennium Town Green near Halls Corner. Now, as they prepare to make Duxbury their year-round residence, I have faith their plans will also be compatible with the town, the neighborhood, and the environment.”
