Impetus for Change

"For everything there is a season..."

For the past several years, the Sisters of Saint Margaret have been reviewing our fiscal situation in light of our commitment to our mission and ministries. The January 12, 2010 earthquake that devastated the country of Haiti made it clear that our ministry is more important than ever. The earthquake served as the catalyst to reconfigure all of our ministries, reshape the way we live, and steward our financial resources so they can be as productive as possible.

We sense an urgent need to reconfigure our ministries and to reshape the way we live. We value a simple lifestyle, and strive to be ecologically responsible so that our resources will be as productive as possible. Our decision to consolidate our operations to Duxbury will not only address our immediate needs but will allow the Society of St. Margaret to become self-sustaining, to grow, and to prosper. This move is for our mission. By setting ourselves free from the burden and expense of maintaining a large facility in Boston, we are channeling our energies and resources so that they will support the future of all our ministries. We intend to do everything possible to insure that the Sisters of St. Margaret will always be able to respond to God’s call and to do God’s work.

We are in the process of this consolidation. It is our conviction that choosing to relocate to Duxbury will allow our community to live in a simplified way in a smaller, more sustainable building. To accommodate the Sisters in Duxbury, a new residence needs to be built. The building plan must address all our daily needs including handicapped accessibility for our infirm Sisters as well as take into consideration our mission and our long-term goals. More information can be found on the New Residence page.

The Spirit & Light Capital Campaign was developed to help the Sisters achieve sustainability. The decision to move to Duxbury will create wonderful new opportunities for ministry and renewal. We will continue to live the Religious Life with its round of liturgical observances, Eucharist, and the Divine Office. The impact of these ministries with both individuals and groups will be felt far beyond any one location. We are excited about becoming permanent residents of the Duxbury Community and being more involved with outreach programs on the South Shore while continuing our many diverse ministries in Boston, New York, and Haiti. The move to Duxbury will free us to do the important work that God has called us to do. The Sisters of Saint Margaret stand at the threshold of a new and decisive moment in the life of our community, one that will carry our long history forward into an even stronger future. God has called us to give up old ways of doing things, and has now set before us the challenge of living our life of prayerful service in new ways and new settings.
